The AMD Athlon64 FX-62 processor is
designed for the user who requires the highest absolute performance. With that
in mind you're looking at the absolute best AMD has to offer. Using the same 90
nanometer SOI technology as previous processors, the 227.4 million transistor
FX-62 is a true marvel of engineering.
The Athlon64 FX-62 requires between 1.35-1.4V to run
normally, which is slightly higher than what the mainstream X2 5000+ draws. At
peak loads, the processor will draw a current of 90.4 amps and output a maximum
thermal load of 125W. Despite a pretty heft heat load, any heatsink that can
cool an Athlon64 FX-60 or FX-57 chip will work just fine with the new FX-62 as
long as it is socket AM2 compatible. With Cool 'n' Quiet enabled, the minimum
theoretical CPU frequency will be 1 GHz using 1.1V core voltage (31.8 amps) with
a maximum thermal power of 38W. Energy efficiency is something that AMD should
get more recognition for, as you'll soon see when we run some total system load
tests.
Yeah baby,

The Athlon64 FX-62 comes from the AMD factory
multiplier unlocked, which gives enthusiasts more options when it comes to
finding the absolute speed limit of their machine. The starting point in this
little adventure is the nice round figure of 2.8 GHz. To keep the results
comparable to the Athlon64 X2 5000+, we chose to keep the CPU clock multiplier
at 14x and raise the motherboard clock speed instead. With 3 GHz in our sights,
clock speed was increased in 2-3 MHz intervals once again.
The Athlon64 FX-62 overclocked quite well and
we didn't hit a single snag till the 211 MHz motherboard clock speed. Mind you,
the processor is running at 2.95 GHz with that frequency, and as you can imagine
the processor needed a bit more voltage. Increasing it to CPU power to 1.4V
solved all issues and allowed the awesome chip to go overclock further.
With the Asus M2N32SLI-DLX motherboard running
at 215 MHz, the Athlon64 FX-62 cracked the 3 GHz
barrier with nothing more than the stock socket AM2 heatsink, and a voltage of
1.45V.
Again CPU-Z cannot properly identify the Athlon64
FX-62
The Athlon64 FX-62 maxed out at a clock speed
of 3.08 GHz which is a very impressive overclock
considering the processor is built on 90nm manufacturing and is stock cooled!
Just imagine what this bad boy could do with the Prometeia Mach II GT... which
is a tale for another day. Hahaha, aren't we a tease!?
An extensive set of benchmarks for each of the
processors is coming up next...
