On one side we have the advocates for Internet control and monitoring, and on the other side we have those who do not want to regulate or monitor the content on the Internet.
NetNanny 3.1
is also another very configurable solution. Besides filtering out the web, it
also has the ability to filter the Usenet, IRC, and e-mail. NetNanny can also be
configured to block access to the desktop, the taskbar, the DOS prompt, the
Start Menu, the find menu, the run menu, the display properties, the hardware
profiles, the device manager, the regedit tool as well as all the drives
attached to your computer.
The coolest thing about NetNanny, is the fact that there are no subscription costs for the continuously updated block/allow list. All of the other solutions had a subscription fee in order for you to have the most up-to-date block/allow list.
Check out the snapshot of the NetNanny software:
Let's see how NetNanny performed:
Pornographic Sites Blocked
6/10
Appropriate Sites Allowed:
10/10
A lot better performance than we've been seeing from the other solutions. While blocking 60% of the inappropriate sites is not something to write home to mom about, it's still a lot better than the BAIR and Cyber Patrol. Not having to pay for a subscription to keep your access lists current is also a nice bonus.
