Conclusion
Testing the different Internet filtering packages has reconfirmed what we knew all along. There is really no substitute for responsible parenting. Even the most effective solutions couldn't filter out all of the inappropriate content. Which goes to show, we cannot simply rely on tools to keep our kids safe. We have to be responsible and make sure we know what our kids are doing. Relying on someone else to make effective tools so that we don't have to be burdened with the responsibility of keeping our kids safe is ridiculous. The Internet is extremely large and diversified. I don't honestly believe there's ever going to be a way to filter out all the bad things.
Looking at the Internet filtering
concept from even another point of view, besides the parenting point of view it,
the whole idea of filtering out things certain people don't like to see becomes
even more ridiculous. The idea is simple. Let's keep the Internet free and
unregulated. It's really the only remaining medium of good unbiased information
if you know where to get it.
Regulating it, will only dilute its value. If you don't like what you see, simply click the "BACK" button or just close your browser. If you don't like the content, no one is forcing you to look at it. So, why would you want to force someone else to look at content that you deem appropriate? This whole Internet filtering business goes far beyond the parenting argument. There are people out there who want to regulate the Internet for everyone, not just kids. It won't be long before you see ISPs with Internet filtering systems in place. As adults, I believe we have the free choice to look at anything we choose. The Internet makes this possible. Let's not turn it into another regulated, biased mass medium such as the television.
