Built on Intel's 65 nanometer manufacturing process and with two physical processing cores running at 3.2 GHz each, backed up by 2MB of L2 cache, the socket 775 chip certainly makes quite a splash.

Business Winstone 2004 runs real applications through a series of scripted activities and uses the time a PC takes to complete these activities to produce its performance scores.

Content Creation Winstone 2004 is a system-level, application-based benchmark that measures a PC's overall performance when running top, Windows-based, 32-bit, content creation applications in Windows XP.

It's a bit surprising to see that the Intel Pentium D 840 and 940 processors are running neck and neck in this office oriented benchmark. The Pentium D 940's large 2MB L2 cache should give it an advantage in Winstone 2004, but there is none.

Sandra is designed to test the theoretical power of a complete system and individual components. The numbers taken though are again, purely theoretical and may not represent real world performance.

Sandra 2005 processor numbers for the Intel Pentium D 940 CPU are virtually identical to those of the Pentium D 840, and they should be. When running its tests Sandra does not take L2 cache into consideration, and each processor is running at the same clock speed. Memory bandwidth for the Intel Pentium D 940 is nice and high; Intel always had fast chipsets.
