By
combining DirectX8 support with completely new graphics, 3DMark2001 SE continues
to provide good overall system benchmarks. 3DMark2001 SE has been created in
cooperation with the major 3D accelerator and processor manufacturers to provide
a reliable set of diagnostic tools. The suite demonstrates 3D gaming performance
by using real-world gaming technology to test a system's true performance
abilities. Tests include: DirectX8 Vertex Shaders, Pixel Shaders and Point
Sprites, DOT3 and Environment Mapped Bump Mapping, support for Full Scene
Anti-aliasing and Texture Compression and two game tests using Ipion real-time
physics. Higher 3DMark scores denote better performance.

The first gaming benchmark went rather poorly for both
dual-core processors, though the Athlon64 X2 4800+ still bested the Intel
Pentium D 840 by over 8000 points. Dual-core operation obviously has no
advantages in this older gaming benchmark, and we're willing to bet that the
higher memory bandwidth of the single core systems gives them an advantage
here.
3DMark05
is the latest version of the highly favoured 3DMark series. It is the first
benchmark to require a DirectX®9.0 compliant hardware with support for Pixel
Shaders 2.0 or higher! Higher numbers are better.

Interestingly, both 64-bit operation and dual-core seem
to benefit the newer 3DMark05, though the Intel Pentium D 840 receives much more
of a dual-core boost over its single-core sibling than the Athlon64 X2 4800+
does. Both dual-core processors post impressive scores. Overclocking makes
little difference to the Pentium D 840's performance.
